PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Former Boston Mayor Ray Flynn is endorsing twice-convicted felon Buddy Cianci in his comeback bid for mayor of Providence.

Flynn attended a fundraiser for Cianci in Providence on Tuesday night. He told WPRI (https://bit.ly/1DA4CzE ) Tuesday night he takes his politics from his faith and believes in redemption.

Flynn was Democratic mayor of Boston from 1984 to 1993 until being appointed U.S. Ambassador to the Vatican. He’s endorsed several Republican candidates, including Sen. Scott Brown when he ran for Senate in Massachusetts.

Cianci faces Democrat Jorge Elorza and Republican Dan Harrop in the Nov. 4 election.

Cianci was driven from office in 1984 after an assault conviction. Following a 1990 comeback, he was forced from office again in 2002 on a racketeering conspiracy conviction.

He served four-and-a-half years in prison.
