MOUNT VERNON, Ill. (AP) - A southern Illinois has been sentenced to 40 years in prison after admitting his role in the beating and stabbing death of his 84-year-old adoptive grandmother.

Forty-four-year-old Timothy Newell of Bonnie pleaded guilty Tuesday to a Jefferson County first-degree murder count in the October 2013 death of Rita “Betty” Newell.

Authorities say an autopsy showed that the victim had been beaten and was stabbed once in the neck with a knife. Her body was found in the Bonnie home she shared with Timothy Newell.

Timothy Newell was arrested the next day in Sweet Springs, Missouri, and originally was charged with stealing Rita Newell’s car.

Bonnie is a 400-resident village about 90 miles southeast of St. Louis.
