Rookie Trent Murphy is looking forward to making his first start on Monday when the Washington Redskins face Dallas.
“It’s a great opportunity for me,” Murphy said. “My family’s excited. I’m excited. To start Monday Night Football, it’s a pretty big deal — really a dream come true. I hate it to be in this situation. I hate to have a teammate get injured. I hate to see that. But, it’s an opportunity, and I plan to make the most of it.”
A second-round pick out of Stanford, Murphy will fill in for outside linebacker Brian Orakpo, who underwent surgery Wednesday morning to repair a torn right pectoral muscle. Murphy has nine tackles this season, playing an average of 24 snaps a game on defense.
“When Brian has been a little bit dinged up before, or when he needs to give Ryan [Kerrigan] a break, he has been a good No. 3 for us,” said coach Jay Gruden. “Being a No. 3 and being a No. 1 are a little bit different, so he’s gonna have really to make sure his stamina is in place and make sure his mental toughness is in place, because they’re going to come after him.”
