CHICAGO (AP) - Chicago police say they are investigating a break-in at a church on the city’s South Side in which $8,000 was stolen from a charity box.

Police say the burglary was reported at about 8:30 a.m. Saturday after an employee at the New Beginnings Church of Chicago saw that someone had smashed the rear glass doors.

Pastor Corey Brooks says he believes the break-in is tied to recent death threats he’s received.

Brooks and other black ministers last month announced they were supporting Republican gubernatorial candidate Bruce Rauner in his bid to unseat Gov. Pat Quinn. Brooks has also appeared in a Rauner campaign ad.

In social media posts, Brooks says he believes the break-in and the threats are tied to his support for Rauner.
