CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) - West Virginia is receiving nearly $1.2 million in federal funding for health programs primarily benefiting women and children.

U.S. Sens. Joe Manchin and Jay Rockefeller announced the funding for the state health department’s Office of Maternal, Child and Family Health on Thursday.

The office will use the funding for early intervention programs to identify newborns at risk of death or suffering from developmental delays. The money also will support a program providing comprehensive services to low-income women and their babies, as well as one that benefits families and children into adolescent years.
