PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - Portland soul and gospel singer Linda Hornbuckle has died at age 59.

Friends and collaborators told The Oregonian (https://is.gd/9kNmep ) she died in a hospital early Saturday after a two-year battle with kidney cancer.

Hornbuckle started singing when she was 6 years old at Portland’s Grace and Truth Pentecostal Church. She later branched out to soul, funk and the blues.

She told The Oregonian in a 2009 interview that she always tries to do something uplifting, “something that might help somebody.”

Hornbuckle was inducted into the Oregon Music Hall of Fame in 2010.

A planned benefit for Hornbuckle and her family will now be a tribute and a celebration of life, held Oct. 14 at the Crystal Ballroom.
