JAY, Maine (AP) - The town of Jay is in mourning following the death of police Chief Larry White Sr.
The department announced on its Facebook page that White died Sunday after a long battle with pancreatic cancer.
The 61-year-old White had been on medical leave since February.
White started working in Jay in 1987 and became chief in 2002. He also took on the role of the town’s fire chief in 2010.
Town Manager Shiloh LaFreniere says White passed away at home with his family. He is survived by his wife, two children and grandchildren.
LaFreniere called White a “huge asset to our community” who went into area schools to warn children about the dangers of drugs and to work against bullying.
