FORT POLK, La. (AP) - The U.S. Army Criminal Investigation Command is investigating the death of a Fort Polk soldier who was suspected of a break-in at a home on the central Louisiana military base.

Fort Polk Military Police and the Army Civilian Police responded Friday to a report of a break-in. KPLC-TV reports (https://bit.ly/1xJDI93) police located a soldier who matched the suspect’s description but when they approached, he ran.

“The military policeman then located the soldier-suspect again and attempted to apprehend him, but the soldier allegedly became combative and continued resisting the military policeman, as well as two other responding officers,” said Kim Reischling, chief of media relations with the Fort Polk Public Affairs Office.

Reischling said officers used a stun gun and pepper spray to subdue and handcuff the man, whose name has not been released. She said emergency personnel began “life-saving measures” when the man began to exhibit medical distress and subsequently transported him to an area hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

An autopsy will be performed by the Armed Forces Medical Examiner, Reishling said.

The incident remains under investigation, she said.

Meanwhile, the officers involved in the incident have been placed on administrative leave and will be restricted to administrative duties, pending the results of the investigation, she said.

Anyone with information regarding the incident is asked to contact investigators at 337-531-2809 or Army.CID.Crime.Tips@mail.mil.
