BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (AP) - Bridgeport officials say four people are hospitalized, two in critical condition, after an overnight fire in an apartment building in Connecticut’s largest city.

William Kaempffer, a spokesman for the city’s police and fire departments, says firefighters responded to the four-story brick building at 12:30 a.m. Sunday.

He says they rescued at least four people, including a 2-year-old girl who was trapped in the burning apartment. Both the girl and the mother are hospitalized in critical condition.

A third patient is still being evaluated while the fourth is listed in good condition.

Kaempffer says two elderly people were also escorted out of the apartment and brought to safety.

He says the fire was contained to the one apartment and is under investigation.
