ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) - Albuquerque police say a woman allegedly beaten by her husband in a domestic violence case that resulted in responding officers getting injured has died.

Police spokesman Tanner Tixier says Renee Tafoya never regained consciousness after the January attack and died from her injuries Sunday.

Police say 41-year-old Anthony Abeyta attacked Sgt. Ferris Simmons and Sgt. Paul Judd when they arrested him the day of the incident.

They say he allegedly struck Judd in the face, leading the sergeant to be hospitalized. Simmons was allegedly struck in the head multiple times.

Abeyta has been indicted on 28 felony counts including attempted murder. He is currently being held in the Bernalillo County Metropolitan Detention Center on $500,000 cash or bond.

Police say the District Attorney’s office is expected to amend the charges.
