DETROIT (AP) - Detroit police say a 7-year-old girl playing outside has been critically injured by gunfire being exchanged between two vehicles.

Sgt. Eren Stephens says the girl was struck Sunday as one vehicle followed another car “at a high rate of speed.”

Family members told the Detroit Free Press (https://on.freep.com/1qPjzt4 ) the vehicles came “flying up” the block and were swerving, with one of the cars knocking over a garbage can shortly before India Williams was hit.

Stephens said the girl was in critical condition late Sunday.

In July, 8-year-old Jakari Pearson was killed while sleeping inside his home in a Detroit public housing project. Authorities say a bullet penetrated a wall.
