SALEM, Ore. (AP) - Oregon Health & Science University officials say they’ve raised most of the $500 million they need to secure a matching gift from Nike co-founder Phil Knight and his wife, Penny.
University officials told a state Senate committee on Monday that they’ve raised $428 million, including $200 million in tax money that will be used to build research facilities.
OHSU has until February 2016 to raise the remaining $72 million it needs to secure Knight’s contribution. The university hopes the influx of money will help researchers improve early detection of cancer.
OSU says the money has come from more than 6,200 donors in 48 states, including 34 people who have contributed $1 million or more.
