ESCANABA, Mich. (AP) - Some of the nation’s top bass anglers are competing this week in a fishing tournament on Lake Michigan’s Bays de Noc near Escanaba.

The Toyota Bassmaster Angler of the Year Championship event runs from Thursday through Sunday. Only the top 50 professionals in the point standings are eligible. A total of $900,000 in prize money is at stake.

The field of competitors includes 2013 Angler of the Year Aaron Martens, 2014 Bassmaster Classic Champion Randy Howell and current Angler of the Year front-runner Greg Hackney.

Pure Michigan is teaming with Bassmaster organization to promote the tournament.

Department of Natural Resources Director Keith Creigh says a number of family-friendly events are being held during the long weekend to attract spectators and spread the word about Michigan’s fishing opportunities.
