CLINT’S WELL, Ariz. (AP) - The U.S. Forest Service says one of its officers has been involved in a fatal shooting south of Clint’s Well in northern Arizona.

Forest Service spokesman Brady Smith says the shooting happened Friday afternoon.

The unidentified officer made contact with someone in the Coconino National Forest.

The officer wasn’t injured, but authorities say the person who was shot later died at the Payson Medical Center.

Smith says it’s unclear under what circumstance a weapon was discharged and by whom.

Authorities haven’t released the officer’s name or the name of the dead person.

FBI spokesman Perryn Collier says the agency responded to a report of assault on a federal officer.

The county Sheriff’s Office also is aiding in the investigation.

The area of the Mogollon Rim is popular with campers.
