AMSTERDAM (AP) - Defending champion Ajax beat Feyenoord 1-0 Sunday in the Dutch league as Ricardo van Rhijn scored an early goal with a free kick from 25 meters out.

Van Rhijn’s shot over the wall after only five minutes caught out Feyenoord goalkeeper Kenneth Vermeer.

But Feyenoord went on to dominate play, particularly in the first half when the hosts had three shots deflected off the crossbar.

Feyenoord came close to equalizing in the closing phase of the game, with two shots on goal from substitute Mitchell te Vrede, but Ajax ‘keeper Jasper Cillessen saved both attempts.

The result leaves PSV Eindhoven top with 15 points, after it trounced SC Cambuur 4-0.

Ajax and PEC Zwolle have 12 points each after Zwolle lost 1-0 at AZ Alkmaar.
