The majority of Americans think the country needs a third political party because the current party system does “such a poor job” of representing the country, a poll released Wednesday said.

The Gallup poll found that 58 percent of those polled want a third party, the eighth year that the majority of those polled think the country needs an option in addition to Republicans and Democrats. It’s just slightly lower than the 60 percent that called for a new party during last year’s government shutdown.

While independents are the most eager for a third party, with 71 percent supporting another option, the numbers are still high among Democrats and Republicans, at 47 and 46 percent respectively.

The poll results come from more than 1,000 telephone interviews with adults across the country between Sept. 4-7. The margin of error is 4 percent.
