PHOENIX — The Arizona Diamondbacks have made 16-year major leaguer Dave Stewart the franchise’s vice president and general manager.

In a restructuring of the front office under Chief Baseball Officer Tony La Russa, the team named De Jon Watson senior vice president/baseball operations.

La Russa says he’s known Stewart for three decades and that his diverse background will be invaluable in the general manager position. Stewart most recently served as a sports agent for Sports Management Partners, an agency he founded.

Watson comes to Arizona after eight years with the Los Angeles Dodgers, where he was most recently the vice president for player development.

The two will be introduced at a news conference Friday.
