DARIEN, Ga. (AP) - Authorities say a college football player died and two other people were injured in a head-on crash in coastal Georgia.

Georgia Department of Public Safety spokeswoman Tracey Watson says 20-year-old Matthew Lamont Mangram of Darien, Georgia died Monday morning when he tried passing the car in front of him. Mangram played for Saint Augustine’s University in Raleigh, North Carolina.

Watson says 42-year-old Rebecca Anne Davis and 14-year-old Lauren Davis were in the other car and are being treated at the Southeast Georgia Health System.

Saint Augustine’s Athletic Director George Williams said in a statement that Mangram was an honor student and a starter on the school’s football team. Mangram, of Darien, was a junior offensive lineman and majored in criminal justice.

Darien is about 60 miles south of Savannah.
