LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) - The Lawrence-Douglas County Health Department has received a $1.3 million federal grant for wellness programs.

The Lawrence Journal-World reports (https://bit.ly/1qQif4D ) Monday that the community health grant will be administered over three years by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The department director says the funding will be used to make it easier for children to walk or bike to school, improve the local food system and combat the use of e-cigarettes.

The funding will temporarily increase the department’s budget from about $300,000 annually to about $800,000. The department plans to hire more health employees and support a sustainable local food program.
