MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - The University of Minnesota’s Twin Cities campus will get nearly $3 million from the U.S. Department of Education to develop new ideas to improve students’ access to higher education, their success in graduating and increase affordability.

Nearly 500 applications were submitted for the federal grant program called First in the World. Twenty-four colleges and universities were selected for the initial year of awards, which total $75 million.

The schools are in 17 states and include 19 public, private and nonprofit 4-year institutions and five 2-year colleges.

The University of Minnesota will receive $2.8 million to increase college completion, its value and affordability.
