EUGENE, Ore. (AP) - Authorities say a Japanese citizen who lived in Lane County 15 years faces charges of custodial interference after flying to Japan with four of his children from a marriage that recently ended.
County prosecutors told the Eugene Register-Guard reports (https://bit.ly/Whdrhb ) 40-year-old Torata Tanaka could be extradited, and they’ve asked for federal help.
An FBI report filed in court said Tanaka drove to Vancouver, British Columbia, on Aug. 25 and then took a flight to Japan.
His estranged wife called police that day to report Tanaka had not returned the children ages 3 to 10 from a scheduled visitation.
A fifth child, a teenager, remained with the mother.
The couple’s divorce was approved two days later. Court documents say they were in the U.S. as students.
