FULTON, Miss. (AP) - An Itawamba County grand jury has agreed with investigators that the death of a Mississippi wildlife officer in May was an accident.
Sheriff Chris Dickinson tells WTVA-TV in Tupelo (https://bit.ly/1ttSYUE ) the grand jury returned the finding after reviewing the evidence in the death of Master Sergeant John Collum.
Collum died after he was struck by a vehicle driven by 19-year-old Cody Weaver of Fulton.
Collum was standing on John Rankin Highway while assisting deputies investigate a reported prowler when he was struck by the vehicle.
Weaver was initially charged with negligent homicide but a Mississippi Highway Patrol investigation in June said Collum’s death was an accident.
Dickinson says the grand jury agreed with the Highway Patrol report and did not find reason to indict Weaver.
