RAWLINS, Wyo. (AP) - Three Wyoming State Penitentiary inmates are charged with trying to kill another inmate.

The Rawlins Daily Times reports (https://bit.ly/19EHEgS ) 36-year-old Michael Grooman, 31-year-old Joseph Martinez and 35-year-old Bobby Schaper appeared in Carbon County Circuit Court via video on Tuesday and were charged with attempted second-degree murder and aggravated assault and battery. They will enter a plea in District Court within 10 days.

Prosecutors allege the men attacked a fellow inmate on Nov. 19, severely beating him and knocking him unconscious.

Court records say video captured by the prison surveillance system shows Grooman hitting the victim, causing him to fall, and then all three men punching and kicking him.

Officers used pepper spray to stop the fight. The victim was flown to a Casper hospital. He has identified Grooman, Martinez and Schaper as his attackers.
