OLIVE BRANCH, Miss. (AP) - Authorities have charged an Olive Branch couple with animal cruelty in connection with a house fire in which 60 cats and a dog died

Maj. William Cox of the Olive Branch Police Department tells The Commercial Appeal (https://bit.ly/1GKGVrE ) Jackie and Donna Beene were charged Tuesday and will appear in municipal court on April 9. They are free on bond.

The fire occurred last Friday.

Authorities say the Beenes, members of New Beginnings Animal Rescue, are thought to have been running an animal shelter from the home.

Cox said he could not comment on the fire investigation portion of the case, but that the investigation is complete as far as any other animal-related charges.

Officials couldn’t provide the name of a defense attorney to comment on the charges.
