BLACK MOUNTAIN, N.C. (AP) - As many as 300 firefighters are battling a wildfire in a steep, rocky area of the mountains of western North Carolina.

Area media outlets report that the fire broke out Tuesday near Black Mountain east of Asheville and has already consumed an estimated 500 acres of land.

Officials said one mobile home has been destroyed and five other homes damaged in the blaze which has also sent smoke across busy Interstate 40.

The North Carolina Forest Service says that, as of Wednesday morning, the wind-blown fire was about 50 percent contained.

Officials said firefighters are expected to remain at the scene for several more days.
