NORFOLK, Va. (AP) - The U.S. Navy hospital ship USNS Comfort will sail away from Norfolk this week for a six-month mission to Central and South America and the Caribbean.

During the mission, the Comfort will visit Barbados, Belize, Colombia, El Salvador, Haiti, Jamaica and Panama, among other ports. The mission is in support of Continuing Promise 2015.

The comfort will carry more than 1,000 people from the Navy, partner nations and nongovernmental organizations, or NGOs. More than 50 NGOs will join the mission, which the Navy says is a marked increase in global participation from previous missions.

During the deployment, the Navy says the Comfort will see an estimated 104,000 patients.
