The White House said Wednesday that nuclear talks with Iran are still “productive” and are continuing, but a framework deal remains elusive.

“Progress is being made,” said White House press secretary Josh Earnest, who didn’t rule out that the negotiations in Switzerland could extend into Thursday. “The talks continue to be productive.”

Negotiators from the U.S. and other world powers failed to meet a deadline of midnight Tuesday to get an agreement on limiting Iran’s nuclear program in exchange for lifting sanctions against Tehran. The negotiations extended into Wednesday, although some participants said a deal was becoming less likely.

As long as progress is being made, Mr. Earnest said, “We would not arbitrarily or abruptly end them.”
