JEFFERSON, Ga. (AP) - Authorities say a 3-year-old boy has died after witnesses said he accidentally fired a gun at a home in Jackson County, northeast of Atlanta.

Georgia Bureau of Investigation officials say the shooting happened Sunday afternoon in Jefferson.

GBI special agent Jesse Maddox said witnesses told investigators the child had accidentally discharged the gun.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports (https://on-ajc.com/19h2mCB) that the boy was taken to Athens Regional Medical Center, where he later died.

Authorities said an autopsy is planned, and the case will be submitted to the District Attorney for review.

Jefferson is about 60 miles northeast of Atlanta.
