SAO PAULO (AP) - A Brazilian hospital says Peru striker Paolo Guerrero likely has dengue fever.
Guerrero was hospitalized on Saturday after exhibiting a high fever and body pain before Corinthians’ match in the quarterfinals of the Sao Paulo state championship.
The Sao Luiz hospital said initial tests “indicate that the player has dengue” fever, although a complete diagnosis had not yet been completed. The hospital said the 31-year-old forward is “doing well” but will remain hospitalized for an undisclosed period.
If the mosquito-borne disease is confirmed, Guerrero is expected to miss about two weeks, which would leave him out of the final stages of the Sao Paulo state tournament. Corinthians hosts rival Palmeiras in the semifinals next weekend.
Guerrero, the team’s top striker, would also miss several Copa Libertadores matches.
