HILO, Hawaii (AP) - A Hawaii County police officer fired a shot Saturday at a suspect in a car, the second police shooting in two days.
The driver, 25-year-old Cherish Torres, of Hilo, was arrested on suspicion of traffic offenses, criminal property damage, theft and terroristic threatening, the Hawaii Tribune-Herald (https://bit.ly/1CGw7UR ) reported.
Police said a South Hilo patrol officer attempted to stop a car at about 4 p.m. after witnessing the driver making a traffic violation on Lanikaula Street in Hilo.
The suspect fled, crashed into another vehicle at Komohana Street and Ainaola Drive, collided with the patrol car and drove down Haihai Street.
The officer at the intersection with Kilauea Avenue got out of his patrol car and the suspect drove toward the officer. The officer fired one shot and the car struck a police vehicle.
Torres was arrested. Police said the car she was driving was reported stolen in Hilo on April 6.
In the Friday shooting, a special-duty police officer was directing traffic at a road construction site in upper Puna when a car pursued by another officer approached.
The car drove toward the officer directing traffic and the officer fired three shots toward the driver, striking the sedan, said Assistant Police Chief Henry Tavares. The driver escaped.
Police described the car as an older-model blue or teal Honda four-door sedan with black or gray side panels.
The names of both officers have not been released.
