PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - The Providence College men’s hockey team has returned to campus after beating Boston University 4-3 for its first national championship Saturday night.

The Providence Journal reports the Friars brought the trophy home Sunday with a police escort.

Hundreds of fans held a rowdy celebration near the college Saturday night. Police said no one was arrested in the three-hour melee but an officer was injured someone threw a bottle and hit his head. Police said some revelers burned a couch and set other fires in the street.



The Journal reports that (https://bit.ly/1IEFhcM) a police report estimated at least 4,000 people in the crowd but college officials said there around 1,000. Police said the crowd stretched three blocks.

The injured officer was released from the hospital after surgery and 20 stitches for his injury.

An official celebration is expected Tuesday.
