PHOENIX (AP) - An Arizona legislator says she’s formally exploring a possible primary challenge to Sen. John McCain, a fellow Republican and five-term incumbent.
State Sen. Kelli Ward said in Monday’s announcement that she wants to provide a “new, positive, principled voice for Arizona in Washington” and that she’s received strong encouragement to run in 2016.
However, her announcement largely amounted to a fundraising appeal, saying she needs more than just words of support in order to make a decision on whether to run.
McCain announced April 7 that he’ll seek to extend his nearly three-decade career in the Senate by running for a sixth term.
Ward is a two-term legislator and a physician.
