MADISON, Wis. (AP) - Authorities have identified a dead man discovered in a lake on Madison’s north side over the weekend.

The Dane County sheriff’s and coroner’s offices say a canoeist found 23-year-old Jacob D. Payne’s body in Lake Mendota near Governor’s Island on Saturday.

The coroner’s office said Monday that preliminary autopsy results indicate Payne died of “homicidal edge weapon violence,” suggesting he was stabbed. That office said Payne was from Fitchburg but sheriff’s Chief Deputy Jeff Hook said during a news conference Payne lived out of his car, which was found parked at a town of Burke repair shop.

Hook says Payne lived in Mississippi until he was a teenager. He said the investigation is ongoing and declined to release any additional details.
