WASHINGTON (AP) - The campaign treasurer for a former D.C. councilmember has been sentenced to 16 months in prison for violating campaign finance laws and evading income taxes.

Thirty-three-year-old Hakim Sutton was also ordered to pay more than $18,000 in restitution at sentencing Monday in federal court in Washington.

Prosecutors say Sutton diverted $115,000 from former D.C. Councilmember Michael Brown’s campaign account and used the money for personal expenses, including international travel.

Brown lost his re-election bid in 2012 after announcing that most of his campaign funds had been stolen. He was convicted of bribery and sentenced to more than three years in prison.
