PHILADELPHIA (AP) - A former Philadelphia’s judge’s criminal conflict of interest trial has been delayed because of an addition to his defense team and is now scheduled for July.
The Philadelphia Inquirer (https://bit.ly/1NyOWoO ) reports that attorneys Nino Tinari and W. Fred Harrison Jr. requested the delay Monday so Tinari can review the evidence against 72-year-old Willis Berry Jr.
The state attorney general’s office arrested the former Common Pleas judge in May, accusing him of directing his judicial secretary to help handle his private business operations. Authorities said he owned and managed as many as 16 properties, including multi-unit rental properties.
A defense attorney said last fall that Berry would enter a guilty plea in exchange for probation, but Berry rejected the deal after learning that it could require forfeiture of his pension.
