NORFOLK, Va. (AP) - The former owner of a convenience store in Norfolk will spend more than two years in prison for participating in a food stamp scheme.
According to court documents, James Robert Carter allowed food stamp recipients to trade their Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits for cash. The 75-year-old Carter gave the recipients about half the amount charged to their EBT cards at the Merrimac Mart and kept the rest of the money.
The Virginian-Pilot (https://bit.ly/1Eui5vy ) reports that Carter was sentenced on Monday in federal court in Norfolk to 2½ years in prison. He had pleaded guilty to conspiracy in January.
Carter’s son, Dwayne, also is charged with conspiracy. The younger Carter is scheduled to stand trial on May 5.
