WEIRTON, W.Va. (AP) - An Ohio businessman is the high bidder for a former Weirton Steel golf course and country club.
WTRF-TV (https://bit.ly/1HkN7H5) reports Gary Owens made the winning bid of $1.775 million for Williams Country Club at a public auction Monday at the Hancock County Courthouse.
The 175-acre property includes an 18-hole golf course, the clubhouse and a lodge.
WTRF says Smith, who works for Argo Sales Co. Inc. of Wintersville, Ohio, declined comment on his plans for the property.
A group of golfers, including a Weirton Steel executive, established the club in 1932. Weirton Steel operated the club and golf course until 1984, when it became employee-owned and club members took over the property.
ArcelorMittal acquired Weirton Steel’s facilities in 2005 and now operates only the tin mill.
