SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) - A man who had been standing on a Northern California highway overpass for hours has been taken into custody following a standoff that caused massive traffic backups.

The San Jose Mercury News reports (https://bayareane.ws/1zaJU63) the man had perched himself on the highest overcrossing of the Interstate 680-Highway 101 connector in San Jose, causing traffic congestion on highways that spilled over onto downtown streets for several hours Monday.

California Highway Patrol Officer Ross Lee says a negotiator tried for several hours to talk the man down. The unidentified man’s relatives later came to the scene to try to coax him down.

Lee says that the man appeared to be holding a knife.

It was not immediately known if the man would face any charges.

Both directions of I-280 and I-680 were closed at the junction at Highway 101 during the ordeal.
