GREENWOOD, Miss. (AP) - Leflore County Fire Coordinator Gary Fulgham will retire at the end of June after 27 years overseeing the local volunteer fire departments.

The 72-year-old Fulgham was first appointed county fire coordinator in 1988, shortly after the Legislature mandated that counties create the position.

The Greenwood Commonwealth reports (https://bit.ly/1GBwZC1 ) Fulgham had spent about 25 years with the Itta Bena Fire Department.

When Fulgham was a volunteer firefighter in the 1960s, the Itta Bena department handled the majority of calls in the county. Only departments in Schlater and Minter City could turn out an old fire truck.

Now, the seven volunteer departments - in Money, Minter City, Schlater, Itta Bena, Sidon, Phillipston and Morgan City - have trucks, and the Mississippi Fire Academy regularly trains the county’s roughly 80 volunteers.
