SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine (AP) - A developer’s plan to turn a historic, neglected Maine armory into a multi-use project appears headed toward approval.
Priority Real Estate Group of Topsham, Maine, wants to turn the 74-year-old National Guard armory in South Portland into a store, a gas station, a cafe, office and community space and a tourism office. The Portland Press Herald (https://bit.ly/1FBTfGm ) reports city officials see the proposal as a creative way to save the currently run-down building.
The $2.5 million project would preserve the building’s art deco-style front. The city’s planning director says the project is “very cutting edge.”
City Manager Jim Gailey signed a contract in November to sell the building to Priority for $700,000. The city bought it for $650,000 eight years ago. It is at the foot of Casco Bay Bridge.
