SOUTH AMANA, Iowa (AP) - Archeologists and volunteers think they’ve found more than 1,000 artifacts from an old American Indian village site in a farm field near South Amana.
Cedar Rapids television station KCRG says (https://bit.ly/1FC0UEy ) the experts and volunteers earlier this month spent seven days at what the Office of the State Archaeologist says was a Meskwaki village from 1839 to 1843, with more than 1,000 residents.
A woman discovered the former village about 10 years ago.
State archaeologist John Doershuk says archaeologists may return to the site for more work if they can gain enough financial support.
