NEW ORLEANS (AP) - A New Orleans company has received a contract form the Navy for construction of two more new hovercraft.
Textron Systems New Orleans announced the $84 million contract in a news release Monday.
The landing craft are designed to haul vehicles, heavy equipment and supplies over water and beaches.
Textron will assemble the landing craft at its New Orleans shipyard. Deliveries are expected in the fourth quarter of 2019.
Textron Systems, in July 2012, was given a $213 million contract for the detailed design and construction of the landing craft. The initial contract included total options for up to eight production landing craft to be delivered by 2020. A contract option for LCAC 101 was awarded in August 2014.
Overall, one training and 72 operational landing craft are to be built.
