OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - Oklahoma City police say an officer shot and killed an 83-year man who was wielding a machete and ignored orders to drop the weapon.

Capt. Paco Balderrama says Officer Tucker Ballinger confronted Richard Dale Weaver Sunday night as Weaver was waving a machete and threatening neighbors and passing vehicles.

Balderrama says Ballinger told the man to drop his weapon and shot him after he refused to do so and “made an aggressive movement” toward Ballinger. Weaver died at the scene.

Balderrama says Ballinger has been employed by the department for two years and has been placed on administrative leave pending an investigation into the shooting.
