PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Providence College students and officials have apologized for a mob that injured an officer hit by a hurled liquor bottle as a celebration swelled after the school’s first-ever NCAA men’s ice hockey national championship.
The Providence Journal reports (https://bit.ly/1EtqQ9a ) that a patrolman was injured by a vodka bottle Saturday night. He received 20 stitches.
College spokesman Steven Maurano said most of the celebration was controlled. He says there was no significant property damage on campus or in the immediate vicinity.
Students set a couch on fire and ignited smaller items as the gathering grew to an estimated 1,000 people. Police say a mob threw bottles, jumped on cars, climbed telephone poles and onto a fire engine as firefighters arrived.
As many as 60 officers were summoned, and it took three hours to disperse the crowd.
