BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) - Burlington Public Works officials say crews in Vermont’s largest city can be called out at any time of the day or night to clear clogs in the sewer system caused by wet wipes that have been flushed by users.
Tim Grover, chief operator of the city’s main wastewater treatment plant, says the wipes knot or ball up with other fibers and plug up pumps.
Unlike toilet paper, which dissolves in water, household wipe products do not decompose when submerged.
Grover tells the Burlington Free Press (https://bfpne.ws/1z9UQku ) crews work around the clock through weekends and holidays to make sure the city’s sewer lines are free of clogs.
The challenge of sewer pipes being plugged by wipes has been reported across the country and the world.
