JOURDANTON, Texas (AP) - A South Texas police officer has been killed and two people critically hurt in a head-on collision in Atascosa (a-tuhs-KOH’-suh) County.

A coroner on Monday identified the man who died as 51-year-old Pearsall police Officer Michael Villarreal.

Investigators say the two-vehicle wreck happened Sunday afternoon about 5 miles west of Jourdanton (JERD’-nt-n) on Highway 97.

The Department of Public Safety says Villarreal was transporting a 15-year-old boy to a juvenile facility when his patrol vehicle and a pickup truck collided.

Sgt. Jason Reyes says the teen and the truck driver remained in critical condition Monday at a San Antonio hospital. Reyes says authorities are still trying to determine what caused the wreck.

Reyes had no immediate information on why the teen was in custody.
