TUPELO, Miss. (AP) - The Tupelo Police Department has applied for a $38,000 federal grant to startup a latent fingerprint lab in Tupelo.

Police Chief Bart Aguirre tells the Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal (https://bit.ly/1aJNE8v ) that fingerprints must now be sent to labs in Jackson or Batesville for analysis.

Aguirre says it takes as long as six months to get the results.

Aguirre says the lab will require a dedicated computer connected with state and federal databases in order to run queries through the Automated Fingerprint Identification System.

The Tupelo Police Department will not keep the latent print lab to itself. It will accept from other law enforcement agencies to help offset the cost.

Aguirre said there is space available for the lab in the new police headquarters under construction in downtown Tupelo.
