MEDINA, Tenn. (AP) - Authorities say a community is mourning after teenage twin brothers drowned while swimming in a pond.
Gibson County Sheriff Paul Thomas and Medina Police Chief Steven Woods told The Jackson Sun (https://bit.ly/1DX3b2e) that the boys were swimming in the pond on Sunday and began struggling. Some nearby friends attempted to help but weren’t successful.
The newspaper reports the bodies of Shawn and Keyshawn Collier were pulled from the water Sunday evening as friends, community members and teachers began to gather at a nearby park.
Median Middle School Principal Steve Maloan said the boys were close to finishing eighth grade and moving to high school. He called them “great kids” and said counselors and ministers would be available to students and staff.
Teachers say the boys were athletic and smart and that both played football and basketball.
