NORMAN, Okla. (AP) - The University of Oklahoma’s Air Force ROTC will have to move to a new location due to plans to demolish a former military barracks on campus.
The Oklahoman (https://bit.ly/1DX4SNd ) reports the ROTC has been instructed to move out of Craddock Hall no later than July 15. The building was used to house naval servicemen during World War II.
Until a permanent location is available, the university’s Air Force ROTC will occupy the fourth floor of a student dormitory.
Nathan Kohl, a senior who joined the Air Force ROTC his freshman year, said the group was downtrodden about the move at first, but they are grateful that they are being provided with a new location.
“The biggest thing is going to be a big blow to camaraderie from losing the space that we have,” he said. “And, we’re also losing all the offices that we have on site here. All of these are student offices that we use. And, there’s just going to be a lot less space at the new place.”
Maj. Brendan Devine says he is unsure of what the group’s long-term arrangement will be.
A university spokeswoman said the school will announce any future plans for the demolition site at the appropriate time.
University president David Boren says “as a former member of ROTC myself, I understand the special feeling that many have for the old building, but it has reached the end of its useful life.”
