HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) - Restrictions on waterway access to a canal along the Connecticut River near a shuttered nuclear plant will be lifted under a plan that also calls for additional security at the Haddam Neck site where spent nuclear fuel remains held in storage.
The agreement was announced Monday by Connecticut’s Department of Energy and Environmental Protection and the Connecticut Yankee Atomic Power Company.
Connecticut Yankee’s nuclear plant in Haddam operated from 1968 until 1996.
The canal was opened for public access in 2007 but officials say a floating barrier was reinstalled in 2013. It will be removed once new land-based security measures are added, reopening the waters to recreational boaters and fishermen.
Connecticut Yankee operates a storage facility at the site holding nuclear waste in 43 dry storage casks.
